Setting up the Computer on a Microsoft Network

A DOS 6.22 client with 525k free is achieve able, but requires some creative thinking to achieve. An alternative is to format a Windows 95 or Windows 98 computer as a pure DOS machine (always boots into DOS), once the networking has been set up. This is a rather technical task and is outside the scope of this documentation. Setting up a DOS client on an NT based network is especially difficult, and so this alternative method should be explored. For further advice contact your networking support personnel.

The Server as a User on a Microsoft Network

The MonTel Server will run 24 hours a day. It should be run as a dedicated user so you can select and specify rights, privileges and access to MonTel, while maintaining network security. As it needs to access users directories need to make this user a member of the administrators group.

Create the user MONTEL, and assign it a home directory. Then the add directory rights, add all the rights as shown in the table below. You will need to create the directories first.

Make sure that:

• You create all the directories.
• You grant sufficient rights (see the table below).
• You set no time restrictions (MonTel runs 24 hours a day).
• You grant no more rights than required, to minimise security risks.
• Create the share drive mappings for the Server PC, especially noting the Users directory (or Directories if you are using groups).

Users that have sufficient security clearance (ReceptionOn in the PABX.INI file) should have read only access to the Main call record directory in data (MAIN).

You should also create the client database directories. The location should be in some grouped data directory but should not be the same as the main call database directory of the server, as you need to give users read and write access to the Master Client Database (CLIENTDB). All users need read and write access to CLIENTDB.

Recommended directory structure for Microsoft NT Networks

Volumes: You may have one or more different volumes. It is good practise to keep data and application separate for security (and virus protection) reasons, however, in cases where this has not been implemented MonTel should follow the standards of the site.

NT server sites are often set up on an application by application basis rather than separating data and applications. If so the structure below may be preferable.

It is very important to maximise security so that the structures are capable of allowing only certain users to access them. It is assumed that the login script contains some DOS mapped directories, and that the user MONTEL has the rights outlined below.
