MonTel Client runs slowly on some Win9x systems with early versions of Norton's Anti-Virus

On some Windows 95 and 98 systems, the MonTel client is reported to run very very slowly or fail to start. The direct cause of this in unknown, and it may not apply to all versions of Norton's Anti Virus. It may be related to System resources which would explain why the problem has not been observed on Windows 2000 systems. It may also be a problem related to Netware Networks. See the article on the Symantec web site: Start-up and shutdown are slow on Novell network when SmartScan is enabled and also a possible fix in Quicken slows down after installing Norton AntiVirus 2000.

In fact this behaviour has only been confirmed on one site running the OEM Epos Version 7.07 23D of Norton's Anti Virus:

The problem was fixed by unchecking "Enable smart scan technology" the the Options for Norton AntiVirus window.

According to Symantec: (What is the Difference Between a Standard Scan and a Smart Scan)

"By only checking key portions of each file, the 'Smart Scan' has the potential to be significantly faster than a standard scan. It is possible that the difference may be less noticeable on systems with large directory structures, since the greatest source of slow-downs is moving from one directory to another.

For general use, the 'Smart Scan' should be adequate. If you suspect that you have a virus, the standard scan is much more comprehensive and more likely to detect an infection."
