How to use SVCMAN to remotely control the MonTel "Windows NT service" Server (ServerSV)

SVCMAN has now been replaced by MtAdmin with a menu option for the same effect as the contents below, except that the system tray in no longer used. For better system tray functionally use SERMON.

SVCMAN (Generally pronounced S.V.C. Man). is short for Service Manager. It really has two parts, and Service control manager, and a Monitoring facility, both capable of running remotely. This topic we discuss the Service Control Manager Aspect.

SVCMAN Service Control Manager.

The SVCMAN Service control manager runs as an icon in the system tray. When you double click on the system tray icon the monitoring screen will pop-up.

The SVCMAN Service control manager will detect if the service has been installed on the relevant computer, providing that the account on which is is being run has the relevant permission. If is does not detect that the MonTel Server service (ServerSV) has been installed the Start and Stop buttons will be disabled If the Console Server (ServerCN) is also not running instead, then it will look like this screen shot, with most of the buttons and Icons greyed out.

In the event that it cannot (or can no longer) detect either the console output or an installed server SVCMAN will flash the Icon in the system tray. If it does detect the that the Service has been installed then it will display the current state of the Service.

You can also start and stop the service, even if it is running on another computer. For this reason you should be carefully about which users have access to SVCMAN. Only MonTel administrators are able to run it.

From the service control manager you can change the start up type, that is should it automatically start when the computer starts, or should it wait until you start it manually - or indeed should it be disabled.
